Gippsland’s Meeniyan Garlic Festival returns in 2020

After drawing a record-breaking crowd of 8,500 people to 2019’s Meeniyan Garlic Festival, the annual event returns to celebrate the region’s high-quality garlic and produce with food, wine, music, arts and crafts on Saturday, 15 February, and the inaugural Garlic Feast set for Sunday, 16 February 2020.

 

Boasting more than two tonnes of garlic, the festival will showcase 15 garlic growers from across Victoria for locals and out-of-towners to taste and enjoy.

 


On Sunday, 16 February, the festival welcomes the Garlic Feast that will be launched as Australia’s first garlic long lunch in the land of the Gipp. Nestled in the Meeniyan trees and crisp, fresh air of southern Gippsland, the degustation experience will be led by world-class chefs, with tickets available for $150 per person. Guests will enjoy outstanding local produce cooked in the ‘Campfire Kitchen’ by Alejandro Saravia of Farmer’s Daughters, Trevor Perkins of Hogget Kitchen and The Grove Gippsland’s Antony Ellis. Various award-winning local wines will be matched to the innovative menu as each course is served.

 

Chefs Saravia, Perkins and Ellis will also be stars of the festival kitchen taking place on Saturday, 15 February in a live cooking show that will educate and entertain, alongside bush food specialist of Peppermint Ridge Farm, Julie Weatherhead.

 

Popular food stalls serving up garlic ice cream and garlic scones return to the festival, with visitors encouraged to sample some new unusual hybrids like garlic coffee, garlic ales, garlic vodka and more.

 

A range of activities will also be on offer, including a classic sheaf toss competition, billy-cart time trials, veggie sculptures and ‘Garlic Quest’ for kids, as well as cow milking to create your own garlic milkshake from scratch.

 

Other program highlights include a full day of expert panels at the ‘Garlic Institute’, like ‘Moon Gardening’ with medical scientist and astrologer Kerry Galea, ‘Truffle Talk’ with Noel Fitzpatrick of South Gippsland’s The Truffle House and more.

 

The annual Meeniyan Garlic Festival has been running for four years, celebrating locally grown garlic and outstanding produce of the region.

 

“We bring together the best local foods, wine, craft beers, cheeses, arts and craft of South Gippsland,” says organiser David Jones. “The Garlic Festival shines a spotlight on the array of produce and vibrant food culture in our region. Our growers will bring 2000 kg of new season’s garlic. Our produce stalls feature a host of garlic-themed foods and it is a great place to learn about garlic – to talk to growers and stock up for cooking or planting your own crop.”
