Eliza Food & Wine opens in Darlinghurst, Sydney

Youthful and fresh, Eliza offers modern, inventive food and a sophisticated and exciting wine list with an expectation of delivering exceptional service.

Darlinghurst welcomes a long-anticipated addition to its dining scene, with the opening of Eliza Food & Wine – a stylish but casual eatery created with approachability in mind and something for everyone.

The name “Eliza” pays homage to the location’s heritage with Darlinghurst named after Eliza Darling the popular wife of Governor Darling.

Owner and executive chef, Jeremy Bentley, who owned and operated award-winning restaurant the devonshire in Surry Hills for seven years, will be at the helm in the kitchen, creating a menu of approachable and contemporary food, rooted in classic techniques.

“We’ve created a place where we can offer interesting and well-executed food at a mid range price point,” says Bentley. “This is a restaurant for every occasion – a casual weekday venue for locals plus somewhere you would want to come and celebrate a special occasion.”

Warm and inviting with a double fronted opening onto buzzing Victoria St, colours of pale salmon pink and muted teal combine with cognac leather and natural wood to give the space a modern look. There’s seating along the bar, comfortable banquets, outdoor seating and a high chef’s table near the kitchen pass.

Foreground roast pork belly, wilted baby gem, smoked almond cream and background local mulloway, fermented cabbage, cucumber, yogurt, sorrel

Bentley, together with Head Chef Shaz Akbar, have created a menu with dishes designed to be enjoyed together, focusing on top quality fresh food where the ingredients do the talking. Chef favourites include roasted pork belly, smoked almond & charred gem lettuce; curried baby corn, chickpea, coconut, lime & coriander; slow cooked lamb shoulder, BBQ eggplant & rosemary; and raspberry tea crème brulee, milk sorbet.

Wine list

A selection of wines from Eliza's wine list

The wine list focuses on a balance of variety and style to complement the food and has been kept small specifically to allow for flexibility and to deliver a regular rotation of wines. With a slight bias towards South Australian wines where both Jeremy and his business partner Simon Rabbitt grew up, the list extends on varietals from both the new world and old world with a few interesting options for those wanting to experiment as well as a carefully curated cocktail list.
